The Basin Research Energy Section is the oil, gas, and coal research section of the LGS, and it performs research into the nature and occurrence of oil, gas, and coal both in Louisiana and around the world.
The Geologic Mapping and Mineral Resources Section of the LGS conducts investigations of the surface geology of Louisiana and renders the results in map format at intermediate and large scales (1:100,000 and 1:24,000, respectively).
The mission of the water and environmental section is to gain a better understanding of the hydrologic systems of Louisiana, particularly through increased knowledge of the properties of the state's aquifers.
